What is a STAR Rating?

When it comes to selecting healthy, safe and nurturing care for their children, parents want to make informed decisions.  STARS for KIDS Now, Kentucky’s voluntary child care rating system, is a tool to help parents choose quality early care and education.  Providers, home or center, demonstrate their commitment to quality care through the STARS for KIDS Now program.

The STARS program rates providers on a 1 to 4 STAR rating system.  Here is what each STAR level means:

One STAR centers and family child care homes are showing commitment to quality by becoming rated. These programs have exceeded the standards for licensing and certification.
Two STAR centers and family child care homes have met the requirements for a one STAR rating plus have additional early childhood training, a family involvement activity and show commitment by have an observation done of the child care environment and have a minimum score.

Three STAR centers and family child care homes have met the requirements for a two STAR plus increased educational and early childhood training for all working with children, increased family involvement activities and higher scores on observations of the child care environment.

Four STAR centers and family child care homes have met the requirements for a three STAR plus have become nationally accredited. Education, training and observation scores also
exceed Three STAR requirements.
