When searching for child care, parents sometimes prefer having someone provide care in the child's home. In-home care is convenient. It can include all children in the family and can be flexible if the children are sick or if a parent has an unusual work schedule. The range of services offered can include full and part-time care, back-up care, sick care, special needs care and live-in care. In-home child care is also typically the most expensive type of care.
Before making a selection, parents should contact several agencies. 4C encourages parents to ask how caregivers are screened and trained, what insurance the agency carries, how long the agency has been in operation and request references from families using the service. It is often helpful to request written information about current fees and services offered.
Something else to consider, if you pay someone to care for your child in your home, you may be creating an employer/employee arrangement. By law as an "employer," you may have to pay employee taxes and benefits including, but not limited to, social security (FICA) and federal unempoyment tax as well as state unemployment and workers' compensation costs. Ask for advice from your tax consultant before choosing in-home care.
In-Home Agencies Au Pairs
Au Pairs are young people, aged 18-26, often from
European countries. In exchange for providing 40-50 hours
of child care per week and performing light housekeeping
tasks related to the children's needs, Au Pairs receive
room and board and weekly payments. European Au Pairs travel
to the U.S. as part of a one-year cultural exchange program
using a J-1 tourist visa. They may or may not have previous
child care experience.
Nannies
Nannies
are employed by the family on a live-in
or live-out basis to undertake all domestic tasks related
to the care of children. Nannies' work weeks typically range
from 40-60 hours per week. Nannies often work unsupervised.
They may or may not have had formal child care training though often
nannies have had a good deal of work experience. Payment
is typically $400-$600 per week.
Back-Up Care
Back-up care is any kind of child care that fills gaps resulting from illness, school holidays, caregiver vacations or any other breakdown in regular care. Backup care can also include times when the regular center or family child care provider is not open for business such as during evenings and weekends.
